Five ways you can help endangered species and wildlife

“I vow to tread lightly, act kindly, and explore mindfully. I shall not take what is not given. I shall not harm what does not harm me.”

  1. Embrace a meatless diet
Research shows clearly that the rising consumption of animal-based proteins is one of the biggest drivers of the destruction of ecosystems, the loss of species, and the climate change. Animal consumption releases more air pollution than all transportation combined. It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car for example. 80% of farmland is used for livestock but it produces just 18% of food calories and 37% of protein.

  2. Seek out sustainability
Always check labels for sustainability certifications before you buy. Endangered species mainly lose their habitat because of the demand of unsustainable agricultural products that increase deforestation and overfishing. Reduce or eliminate your consumption of these products and buy from companies that have implemented sustainable agricultural and fishing practices, such as zero deforestation or organic farming. Buying sustainably sourced food is important in protecting endangered species.

  3. Avoid plastic use and waste
Plastic pollution is found everywhere impacting and killing wildlife and endangering our health (and more the one of our children) around the globe. We found plastic in the air we breathe, in the water we drink, in the salt we eat, in the water we swim, and in the fish we eat. Plastic is ubiquitously found including in remote areas of the earth like in high mountains and remote islands with no human presence. The impacts on wildlife is enormous.

  4. Consume wisely and less
GDP in itself is not an accurate indicator of progress as it leads to an increase in material and energy usage. In our finite world (only food could be indefinite if well manage), the more we consume, the more the planet and nature suffer. The transition to a circular economy is a tremendous opportunity to transform our economy so our current and future generation can live peacefully and happily in balance with Nature.

  5. Join us
Saving nature and endangered species is at the very heart of what we do. We ensure no wasting resources (98% of ESI's spending is directed to field conservation activities), and our financial independence from any commercial interests. Make your donation today and support our best efforts to protect nature. Your support provides the backbone of our organization and is invaluable to our efforts.
